Review of The First Doctor Sourcebook (Cubicle 7)

I write a lot about D&D, but that game is actually a fairly late love in my life; I didn't get bitten by the bug until 1982. Well, obviously – given that I was born in 1972 – that's still pretty early on. However, there's one thing that I've been following for even longer. That thing is Doctor Who. As far as I can gather, … Continue reading Review of The First Doctor Sourcebook (Cubicle 7)

Goodbye, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart (Nicholas Courtney)

I was very young – only four or five – when I began watching Doctor Who. This was back in 1977-8, when Tom Baker was newly the Doctor. However, due to the wonderful way that the ABC was constantly showing (and thus repeating) the program on every weeknight, I got to see an awful lot of Jon Pertwee’s Doctor, and thus – as his recurring … Continue reading Goodbye, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart (Nicholas Courtney)

Oh, that Steven Moffat…

Steven Moffat talking about the 2010 Doctor Who Christmas Special: “Oh, we’re going for broke with this one. It’s all your favourite Christmas movies at once, in an hour, with monsters and the Doctor and a honeymoon and – oh, you’ll see. I’ve honestly never been so excited about writing anything. I was laughing madly as I typed along to Christmas songs in April. My … Continue reading Oh, that Steven Moffat…

Doctor Who RPG

I’ve just bought the new Doctor Who RPG. It’s a very nice package indeed. Player’s Guide, Gamesmaster’s Guide, two short adventures (and a lot of adventure seeds), plus other stuff. You can play as the Doctor, as the Doctor’s companions, as aliens, as another Timelord, as members of Unit or Torchwood… it’s a nice basic system which seems to handle everything very well.  Action Resolution … Continue reading Doctor Who RPG

Doctor Who and Hugo

Well, I saw The Doctor’s Daughter for the first time last Sunday, and it was great. Really, really good. Astonishingly, it wasn’t written by Steven Moffat. I would dearly love to see Jenny again, and – with any luck – we will. Meanwhile, Steven Moffat has won the Hugo Award for the third time running, this time for Blink. I have no doubt he deserved … Continue reading Doctor Who and Hugo

Doctor Who, Yggsburgh and other things

Doctor Who was merely “ok” on Sunday (Planet of the Ood), as compared to the awesomeness that was The Fires of Pompeii the week before. I made up for that with watching two classic Dr Who stories I’d just picked up – The Curse of Fenric and Ghostlight. They’re two of my favourite stories from the classic era, both from the final series before the … Continue reading Doctor Who, Yggsburgh and other things

Torchwood – Out of Time

To call Torchwood erratic in quality is simply stating an obvious truth: the scripts are all over the place. Characterisation is a mess. Although Gwen and Captain Jack – when he gets something to do – fare pretty well, the rest tend to go between invisible and somewhat annoying. Do the writers get things write? Yes, occasionally. Last night’s episode was one of the better … Continue reading Torchwood – Out of Time
