Mercenaries
To hire mercenaries, all equipment must be bought. In addition, there is a monthly fee (paid in advance) which doubles during times of war.
Most mercenaries are hired at trade fairs.
Archer (Longbow) - 4 gp/month
Longbow Archers are able to operate as light infantry when not employing bows.
Archer (Shortbow) - 3 gp/month
These troops do not fight as infantry except in desperate situations.
Artillerist - 5 gp/month
Required to operate siege weapons
Captain - 500-800 gp per month
A captain is a fighter of 5th - 8th level. Can captain as many scores of men as levels (so 100-160 men), and one lieutenant per level. Costs 100 gp per level per month.
Determine level with d10: 1-4 = 5th, 5-7 = 6th, 8-9 = 7th, 10 = 8th
Crossbowman - 2 gp/month
Can use any sort of crossbow. Heavy crossbowmen typically wish a light infantryman to accompany as shield bearer. Fight as light infantry.
Footman, Heavy - 2 gp/month
Trained to fight in close formation. Typically sword & shield, axe and shield, pole arms, etc.
Footman, Light
Skirmishers who do not fight in close formation. Useful in rough terrain, woods, etc.
Footman, Pikeman
Especially trained to fight with pikes and manuever with them. Mercenary pikeman are of high quality (good morale!)
