Mercenaries

To hire mercenaries, all equipment must be bought. In addition, there is a monthly fee (paid in advance) which doubles during times of war.

Most mercenaries are hired at trade fairs.

Archer (Longbow) - 4 gp/month

Longbow Archers are able to operate as light infantry when not employing bows.

Archer (Shortbow) - 3 gp/month

These troops do not fight as infantry except in desperate situations.

Artillerist - 5 gp/month

Required to operate siege weapons

Captain - 500-800 gp per month

A captain is a fighter of 5th - 8th level. Can captain as many scores of men as levels (so 100-160 men), and one lieutenant per level. Costs 100 gp per level per month.

Determine level with d10: 1-4 = 5th, 5-7 = 6th, 8-9 = 7th, 10 = 8th

Crossbowman - 2 gp/month

Can use any sort of crossbow. Heavy crossbowmen typically wish a light infantryman to accompany as shield bearer. Fight as light infantry.

Footman, Heavy - 2 gp/month

Trained to fight in close formation. Typically sword & shield, axe and shield, pole arms, etc.

Footman, Light

Skirmishers who do not fight in close formation. Useful in rough terrain, woods, etc.

Footman, Pikeman

Especially trained to fight with pikes and manuever with them. Mercenary pikeman are of high quality (good morale!)

Hobilar, Heavy 3 gp/month

Mounted infantry that ride into combat and then dismount to fight.

Hobilar, Light 2 gp/month

Mounted infantry that ride into combat and then dismount to fight.

Horseman, Archer 6 gp/month

Generally nomadic folks, undisciplined and prone to looting. Fight hand-to-hand only if circumstances fource it. Wears leather or chain, and can carry small shields when not using bows.

Horseman, Crossbowman 4 gp/month

Only light crossbows. Wield handheld weapons in combat if necessary.

Horseman, Heavy 6 gp/month

Trained to operate in close formation and use most weapons common to henchmen.

Horseman, Light 3 gp/month

Not trained to operate in close formation. Skirmish-Raider types only.

Horseman, Medium 4 gp/month

Operate in formation, but are lighter horses and do not ride as close to their fellows.

Lieutenant 200-300 gp/month

A fighter of level 2 (70%) or 3 (30%). Can control 20-30 troops, depending on level. Can command 2 or 3 lieutenants.

100 gp per level per month to hire.

Sapper/Miner 4 gp/month

Fight as heavy footmen, if required. Wear light armour because of their duties.

Sergeant - 10 * troop rate

A sergeant is a 1st-level fighter who can command up to 10 soldiers. The cost of a sergeant is ten times the base rate of the troops he or she commands.

Slinger 3 gp/month

Slingers can wear light armour and shields and use slings. They can use lighter weapons (e.g. short swords, hand axes, daggers).
