A few years ago… must have been about 7, I guess, I picked up the first book of a new Australian fantasy writer: Jennifer Fallon. The book was Medallon, and although moderately entertaining, I didn’t find it good enough to continue on with the rest of the series.
Anyway, for the past few months I’ve been reading a lot of Australian fantasy, and, having worked through most of the books that were readily available, I came across the further works of JF. So, on the theory that Jennifer may have become a better writer since her first book (and that I’ve enjoyed Sara Douglass’s later books more than her early ones, see also Terry Pratchett), I picked up the first book of her second series, Second Sons. (The book itself is called Lion of Senet).
That was Friday. On Sunday, I bought books 2 & 3 of the series, and read them both on Monday. I really, really enjoyed them.
Lots of interesting characters, and characters that actually manage to change in important ways over the course of the series. Worth having a look for if you enjoy good fantasy books.
I also find that she’s co-written a Stargate SG-1 book, so that’s another point in her favour.
Oh dear… now to pick up the rest of her works!
