Steven Moffat talking about the 2010 Doctor Who Christmas Special:
“Oh, we’re going for broke with this one. It’s all your favourite Christmas movies at once, in an hour, with monsters and the Doctor and a honeymoon and – oh, you’ll see. I’ve honestly never been so excited about writing anything. I was laughing madly as I typed along to Christmas songs in April. My neighbours loved it so much they all moved away and set up a website demanding my execution. But I’m fairly sure they did it ironically.” – reported on the Doctor Who News Page
I actually spent part of the weekend watching The Waters of Mars, The Pandorica Opens and The Big Bang (again). Although I really have enjoyed the Steven Moffat/Mat Smith series, I really miss Russell T Davies & David Tennant. The emotional payoff for the end of the RTD scripts is incredible, and The Waters of Mars is one of his best. I’m not entirely fond of the paradoxes that Moffat creates; it was great in Blink because it was pretty much the first. The one in The Big Bang didn’t work so well for me.
Mind you, RTD was still getting a grip on the format for the first season with Christopher Eccleston. We’ll see how the second series goes… although I’m feeling impatient already and there’s still months and months to go!
We rewatched the last four of this past series tonight, and I did enjoy them a little more on the rewatch. There was a great comment on Outpost Gallifrey that sums up my feelings as well — “I loved Matt Smith’s first series, but I’m not sure I loved Moffat’s first series.”
The one thing the series did leave me with is the desire for more — I can’t wait until it returns! Unlike the year of specials: I was ready for Tennant to leave, so the previous year just felt like counting down until the end.
I really hope the next series includes more of Rory. I’d love a full season of 11/Amy/Rory team. (But then I also felt that Mickey and Captain Jack were in too few episodes; the one thing I’ve disliked since the series returned was how few people travelled with the Doctor at a time.)
I totally agree about Rory. I like Amy, but Rory is glorious. My favourite episode of the season was probably Amy’s Choice, which has a lot of excellent Rory stuff in it (as well as a great performance from Toby Jones as the Dream Lord.)
