D&D character backgrounds

My attention has just been drawn to the “Scales of War” backgrounds in Dragon #366, and I think they’re pretty neat and they would work for our campaign – they’re quite generic. So, every PC in the Friday campaign can choose one background.

This is one of the free issues of Dragon, so you can download the file from here:

My suggestions for the group:
Martin/Gromley: Seducer – add Bluff and Insight to your class skills and gain +1 to both skills
Nate/Will: Noble Scion – add one knowledge skill to your class skill list and +2 bonus to that skill
Adam/Lsuj: Eldritch Harlequin – add Bluff and Thievery to your class skills, and +1 bonus to both skills.
Rich/Drakult: Brother in Battle – add Endurance to your class skill, and +3 to endurance checks.
My thoughts on these backgrounds:
Gromley has an ongoing desire to seduce most of the barmaids he meets, and it seems to have some effect. So, let’s add it into his background.
Will is at university. He’s learnt a couple of things despite himself.
Lsuj, with his love of Zagyg and humour, seemed that the Harlequin was a good background, especially with bluffing something he does often. (No, it really is the Toga of Zagyg!)
Drakult (or however you spell it) is the least defined of the backgrounds I’ve seen; so I’ve suggested a simple warrior-type one.
Feel free to peruse the article and choose another, although please run it by me first!

I’ve also created Greg’s character Xoria for the Sunday campaign using the full character generator – it’s a very, very cool program. Still with a few bugs. Of note…
  • the Dragonborn power “Draconic Fury” is nowhere to be seen on the character sheet. The feat “Draconic Frenzy” does appear, however.
  • The power card for Lay on Hands does not include a reminder of the Healing Hands feat (+Cha mod hp healed)
Still, neither of those are game-breaking.
If you’d like me to create a character sheet for you for our next game, post me the stats, equipment, feats & powers of your PC and I’ll run them through the program. One day I’ll get a laptop, so we can actually do this at the table…
