More DVDs – Joy!

Well, the latest of the Classic Doctor Who DVD releases has hit Australia – in a boxed set entitled “Myths and Legends” three stories: The Time Monster, Underworld and Horns of the Nimon. None of them are great stories, although they have some moments, but it moves me three closer to having all the classic serials that still exist. I’m still wondering what they’ll do with The Tenth Planet, the last serial of Hartnell, which unfortunately is missing its final part! The release of The Invasion indicates that they might use the surviving audio with an animated episode, but we don’t actually know what they’ll do.

Also making their way into my possession today was the second series of Sanctuary, the horror film Trick ‘r Treat and the first series of the new Survivors. If you remember my rant on what Channel Nine did to Survivors, you’ll understand why I’m very happy to now have it uncut.
At least I hope it’s uncut.
I’m slowly putting together the players to play a few multi-player wargames. Sarah, Randy and I have been meeting the past few weeks to play Martin Wallace’s God’s Playground, a brilliant 3-player (and only 3-player) game about Poland in the Middle Ages. It’s only lightly a wargame, containing much more of the Euro about it. Next week I hope to add Nash to the group and to get to play Successors, a 4-player true wargame (albeit a CDG) about the wars of the Diadochoi – the generals of Alexander the Great who then squabbled about his empire. It looks fun and has relatively simple rules – especially for those of us who have been introduced to Hannibal: Rome vs Carthage
Eventually we’d like to play the six-player Here I Stand, although we may need to set aside a day or weekend to tackle that! (Estimated play time: 6 hours.)
Roleplaying has been erratic of late. We finally managed to get together with Martin to finish off the penultimate adventure of the Dawn of Defiance. Three or four more sessions and we’ll finish it – and say goodbye to Star Wars Saga (at least for now). The system isn’t without its flaws – especially with the skill system whenever it targets defenses – but we’ve had fun with it.
Meanwhile, the Friday D&D group has been very disrupted of late. I’m hoping to run a one-shot AD&D adventure on Friday, but I’m not 100% sure if the group is available. I’d prefer it if some of them would actually post if they’re not available…
I managed a good weekend of boardgaming last, though: Talisman (with the new Highland expansion), Carcassonne, At The Gates of Loyang, Game of Thrones LCG, Memoir ’44, Citadels, Dominion, In the Year of the Dragon and a few games of Magic. It’s been nice seeing Sarah about as well – we had some hilarious games of 4-player Dominion!
