BattleTech for Laurie

Laurie rather enjoyed our BattleTech game on the weekend, and inquired about what he needed to play the game. So, here’s an annotated list, with links to the products on MilSims (click on teh prices):

BattleTech Introductory Box Set – $68 – 24 plastic mechs, 2 double-sided maps, quick-start rules, introductory rules, universe book, universe map, 2 quick reference cards. Definitely start with this.
Starterbook Sword & Dragon – $34 – This is the campaign book we’re currently working our way through; it’s the companion of the Intro Box set.
Right… that will give you everything you need to start playing BattleTech. You want more? Well…
Technical Readout 3039 – $50 – Describes the history and basic stats of all the Mechs and Vehicles of the introductory era. Not strictly necessary, but nice to have.
Record Sheets 3039 – $18 – Includes 2 scenarios, more advanced Vehicle rules, plus record sheets for 80 or so Mechs and Vehicles for the Succession Wars era. You’ll need to do a lot of photocopying if you get this, and it’s not strictly necessary, especially if you get its big brother:
Record Sheets 3039 PDF – US$13 – includes 300-odd record sheets of vehicles, mech variants and aerospace elements. This is an electronic file available from a few electronic retailers; I’ve given the official shop above, you might be able to find it elsewhere cheaper.
Map Compilation 1 – $50 – 24 maps for BattleTech. I’m not 100% sure if MilSims still has this in stock – Amazon.com does, though. You probably want it once you play a few games. There’s also a compilation 2.
The last group of record sheets will give you a lot of vehicle & aerospace assets that you don’t have the rules for. At this point, it’s probably time to pick up the full rules of the game.
Total Warfare – $68 – 312 page full-colour hardcover with all the vehicle, battletech, infantry and aerospace rules for combat. It doesn’t have the construction rules, though.
TechManual – $68 – 312 page full-colour hardcover will all the construction rules. You don’t need this to play the game, but once you want to start fiddling with designs… yeah, you need it then.
After that, there’s things like the 3050 Upgrade Technical Record & Sheets, the Jihad products and other interesting things… but, for now, that’s most of the products you should be interested in.
