Board game sale – new games

Milsims is having their latest boardgame (and RPG) sale. Urgh.

I made my order, and they’ve sent out a couple of the items to me. (They should arrive early next week)
  • Fields of Fire – a WW2/Korean/Vietnam solitaire squad game.
  • Monmouth – an American Revolution 2-player wargame (hey, it was $25).
However, a few items have wandered out of stock, so I’ll have to wait until they come back in before they send them to me (at the sale price):
  • Rail Barons – the first expansion to Steam. I’m very fond of Steam; it’s the “fixed” version of Age of Steam IMO, but Rail Barons also sees Martin Wallace adding a stock game to it – much like Railways of England of Wales added the stock game to RRT. Reports are quite good for this expansion, so I needed to pick it up. (I haven’t actually gotten around to playing a game of Railways of the World yet – or 1856 – too many train games!)
  • Tomb of Ice – the third expansion to Descent. Yes, this will give me all the Descent expansions (save the minis; couldn’t be bothered with them, really).
  • Roma II, Arena – Stefan Feld has designed several games I really like, and Roma is one of them – a very nice 2-player card and dice game. This one completely redesigns all the cards for a new standalone game… which also works as an expansion.
Randy accused me of being an Ameritrasher last night. Rubbish! I’m an omnigamer – I play pretty much any sort of boardgame if I enjoy it. And I enjoy a wide spread of games, which is why I’m having so much trouble storing them all at present.
Doomed Battalions arrived last night, one of the expansions for ASL. There are three more core modules I need to get – For King or Country (British & Commonwealth), Hollow Legions (Italian) and Code of Bushido (Japanese). FKaC should be out sometime soon, as far as that term means anything with MMP’s release schedule. Hey, it could be out later this year if we’re very lucky! HL and CoB will probably take longer.
Both the HL and CoB sets require quite some redesign for their rerelease. Hollow Legions is gaining the desert boards and scenarios that were printed in the original British set, West of Alamein. And Code of Bushido is being merged with Gung Ho to be the Pacific Theatre set for ASL. They’ll be great sets when they are released – but when that will be is hard to say.
I did get to play ASL last night, albeit the starter kit version. Randy and I played through 88s at Zon, a mission that saw my Yanks attempting to fight our way past a few German first and second line squads – as well as two sets of 88 Anti-Aircraft guns. Those AA guns are terrifying when you’re infantry. Dice rolling for both of us was erratic – more so for Randy, who managed to combine really good rolls with really bad rolls. I almost managed to complete the mission successfully, but a good last turn from Randy gave him the win.
Later today: Runewars and Dr Who RPG, assuming things go to plan.
