So, You Want to be a Goblin is an adventure for first-level adventurers – goblins – by the GM Tim. It features goblins of the Gnaalbec tribe of Chult attempting to pass their rite of adulthood, which will enable them to wear the cool masks goblins wear in Chult. The goblins must complete four tasks to pass the rite:
- Defeat a cockatrice in a garbage dump on the borders of Port Nyanzaru
- Defeat kuo-toa (or grung) while dealing with a rickety bridge over a river
- Defeat pseudodragons around an obelisk that emanates an anti-magic field
- Defeat a young ankheg in a nest filled with bones and shrubs
Complete the quests and be rewarded with goblin adulthood and your very own mask!
This is a combat-heavy adventure, where the combination of terrain and monsters provide much interest, along with the novelty of the entire party playing goblins. I feel that the potential for role-playing between the players is quite strong, and a group that enjoys that facet of the game may also have fun hurling insults at their foes. The adventure provides suggestions for a Session 0 for character creation, along with a list of questions to help flesh out the background of the characters. These questions, written in goblin-speak, are excellent for setting the mood. I quite like this one: “Who qween? How long she qweening?”
The main problems with the adventure come from its presentation. It needs better proof-reading, improved layout, and it would be very nice if there were a scale for the maps. I haven’t played it, so I’m unsure how challenging the combats are, but I suspect a lot of DM discretion will come into play to keep most of the goblins alive. It would have been nice to see some other challenges than combat.
However, I found this a charming adventure, despite its limited applicability to most campaigns. I can see this as being the first adventure for a bunch of goblins, and that’s good. Recommended.
