A Taste of Trouble is a short D&D 5E adventure by M.T. Black for level 1-4 characters. The characters explore the cottage of a missing hedge wizard as they try to find her, facing various challenges along the way. The adventure will most likely take 2-4 hours to complete.
I find it an utterly charming adventure.
It’s not big. The cottage is a mere four areas. However, there’s enough in it that I can’t tell how it’ll run. The party might be deceived. They may have to flee. They may end up saving the day. You’ve got combat, role-playing, and exploration all packed into the tiny space.
M.T. includes scaling notes, in the D&D Adventurers League tradition, that allow you to adjust the adventure to various levels. It’s written for five level 3 adventures, with the notes giving five “tiers” of scaling, from very weak to very strong. Experienced DMs may want to still adjust things based on their parties, but it gives a starting point for the DM in a rush.
The adventure is set in the World of Iskander, the author’s setting that he has been building out through several adventures and supplements, The lore in the adventure relates to the Wand & Robe society, a loose-knit society of lesser magic users, though I’d have no trouble adjusting it to a lot of other D&D settings.
The adventure has something of a whimsical tone, as you can see from the cover, while also possessing a harder edge. It’s nicely produced. I’m not so much a fan of the smaller format used (what I’d call A5 pages), it’s of a piece with the rest of the Iskander range.
Ultimately, I really like this adventure, which offers an entertaining experience whilst also introducing characters that can be used on a ongoing basis. If you need a low-level scenario for a single session, this is one that is worth checking out. Highly recommended!
