Well, another successful weekend of gaming – and a lot of interesting games played. Once again, a big thank-you to Randy and Meagan for putting up with us. 🙂
I’ve posted all the game reports on bgg, links follow:
I picked up Rich from his house, and we arrived at Randy’s at about 2pm. Troy wasn’t going to come until after dinner, so we had about 4 hours of 3-player gaming to fit in. Randy chose first, and decided that Ra was the game we should play. (Session Report). It was a very close game indeed. I won it on 37 points, with Rich 2nd on 37 points, and Randy 3rd on 36 points!
After that, I decided it was time for a game of Thurn and Taxis (Session Report). I like this game, but I’ve played a *lot* more of it than Randy (0 games) or Rich (1 game).
Rich then decided it was time for a game of Ticket to Ride: Europe (Session Report). I was lucky, and Rich wasn’t. Rich never wants to see another tunnel again!
Still a bit of time before dinner, so Randy was next to choose: Caylus (Session Report). This is a game of pure skill, and I’ve played a *lot* more of it than Rich and Randy. Didn’t stop them almost beating me, but eventually the game was mine.
Troy arrived for dinner, and then we were into the big game of the night, Die Macher (Session Report). This was a big, long game – about 4 hours! Randy had his revenge on me for my earlier wins. I don’t know why he was also revenging himself on Troy and Rich, but I assume there was a good reason. 🙂
Finally, with the time at 11:15, I suggested a quick game of Niagara (Session Report) to finish the evening. This is another pure-skill game, but it can be quite unpredictable. I quite like it… Randy does as well, given he won his first game!
So, that was the game day. I eventually got home at about 1.30am.
Also on the weekend I played 3 games of Arkham Horror solo; one on Saturday, two on Sunday. (Session Reports). I’ve been playing with the Dunwich Horror expansion, and the games are *difficult* – really, two difficult for a solo investigator.
I also gave Randy a bunch of money for the trip he’s making to MilSims on Tuesday. I rather hope that at least a few of the games I want they have in stock.
When I was in Card Crazy on Saturday, I bought the 2nd-hand copy of the Advanced Squad Leader rules they had there. Eek. It’s a game I’ve been interested in for a long, long time – it tends to have a lot of fanatic followers. The rules are… arcane… to say the least.
Consider the following paragraph:
8.311 RESTRICTIONS: A unit eligible to use TPBF vs a Known enemy unit [EXC: unarmored vehicle; 7.212] cannot use FPF vs an adjacent unit. Infantry manning ordinance cannot fire it during FPF [EXC: OVR Prevention; C5.64] but must add their inherent FP to the FPF attack.
Acronyms are *everywhere*. I’ve asked Randy to pick me up a copy of the ASL Starter Kit #1, but it’s apparently not much easier (if less complex). Oh well. 🙂
At present, I’d really like the boardgaming sessions to be every 2 weeks, with people volunteering to host them (and likely with Randy picking up the lion’s share of them due to the fact that he Really Likes Boardgames… so do I, but my place is more challenging to get to). This is not counting the times I’ll be just going to Randy’s to play games, but anyway…
Structurally, a boardgame day (BGD) would be casual/short games in the afternoon, followed by a longer game in the evening, with the hosting person choosing that game. (Dependent on other people’s wishes, of course). These BGDs wouldn’t necessarily be always big affairs – the 12+ people we occasionally get wouldn’t be assumed, but instead just an opportunity for people, if they were free, to know that they could play boardgames.
If Sarah or Bradford (or anyone else) wanted to hold such a day, they’d obviously have an advantage in getting to the day. 🙂 (Personally, I’d love for Sarah to have another BGD at her place, given the trouble we have getting her to Randy’s… it’s just too far out of my route).
Every 2 weeks is for a reason – the other 2 weeks are bigger RPG days for Sarah, Daniel and myself. Mind you, I’d probably still be available on the Saturday because I’m in a big BG phase at present, but…
The next few weekends are:
- Sat 26/Sun 27 May
- Sat 10/Sun 11 June – I’m going to be unavailable on the 10th, but I’ll be back on the 11th
- Sat 24/Sun 25 June
Any volunteers? Saturday is probably generally the better day…
