Into the Forest of Shadows

My Greyhawk heroes will be stepping into the Shadowwood on Friday evening (assuming the session doesn’t get cancelled again), where they will attempt to find the evil necromancers and corrupt druids that have been causing trouble for the good folk of Greyhawk. They’ll be accompanied by the High Priest of Pelor – one of my old PCs – and we should see a session that allows Martin’s dwarven druid to shine.

I hope.
How exactly does a dwarven druid shine, anyway?
I can certainly see Nathaniel’s character enjoying some of the wilderness adventuring. It’ll be a nice change from the labyrinths of stone they’ve been wandering through. Instead, there’ll be labyrinths of briars and tangled thickets. Having a ranger who can shoot a great distance will be interesting in the outdoors. Did I say interesting? As a DM, I mean frustrating.
I’ve got some roleplaying planned with the wild elves of the wood. There’ll be some combat. Skill challenges? Now, that’s a problem. I’m not particularly happy with the skill challenge I drew up for the session, so that might be abandoned. Hmm. I’m particularly unhappy with how the 4e skill challenges normally work, though – especially the DCs of the skill checks. (In a recent published module, the diplomat of the group needed to make a DC 20 check. He had a +21 bonus. Huh?)
For those wanting to find the wood on a map of Greyhawk, you probably won’t find it: I just needed a wood nearby to Greyhawk, so it exists. The maps don’t probably show things in the right scale, anyway.
If my players have any requests for the session – encounters, plotline, recaps, and so on – now would be the time to post them!

  1. Nature checks, lots of nature checks. And Nature-based thingies should just automatically defer to him amongst the party, recognising his druidic abilities.
