The Light of Burning Shadows – a review

I finally managed to get around to reading The Light of Burning Shadows by Chris Evans on the trip to Melbourne on Thursday. Yes, a book I ordered especially in from Amazon/America because I wasn’t sure if I could get it yet in Ballarat, which had been sitting on my bedside table for a couple of weeks as I kept finding myself otherwise occupied. Go figure. … Continue reading The Light of Burning Shadows – a review

A few thoughts on some fantasy books

“You don’t just put in a race of shapeshifters then ignore the tension of people wondering if someone they know has been replaced. That would just be irresponsible.” – Brandon Sanderson I’ve had a good time reading books recently. The big ones have been by Brandon Sanderson (designated heir of Robert Jordan): Elantris, and then the Mistborn trilogy. Elantris had something of a messy ending, … Continue reading A few thoughts on some fantasy books

David Eddings

I’m apparently really out of touch at the moment.  David Eddings, the author of The Belgariad and The Elenium, died three weeks ago. I only learnt of it today. The Belgariad was the "big" fantasy series when I was still at school. (Along with the Riftwar saga, by Ray Feist). It took some time for me to actually get around to reading it, but it was so worth … Continue reading David Eddings

Anne Bishop – Queen of Shadows

Well, after reading Queen of Shadows for the second time (and then The Invisible Ring yet another time), I’ve got to say that it is definitely Anne Bishop’s strongest book for a little while. It’s much, much better than The Invisible Ring, despite drawing on that book for some of its resonances.   One of the truly exceptional things about Queen of Shadows is that in her Black Jewels trilogy, Anne Bishop told the … Continue reading Anne Bishop – Queen of Shadows

A Memory of Light, times three

Well, the announcement has been made: A Memory of Light, the final volume of Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time series, will be published as three books. The first (The Gathering Storm) will come out in November this year. It’s hoped that the second and third parts will come out in 2010 and 2011, but nothing is set in stone yet. This makes me happy. I … Continue reading A Memory of Light, times three

Jennifer Fallon

A few years ago… must have been about 7, I guess, I picked up the first book of a new Australian fantasy writer: Jennifer Fallon. The book was Medallon, and although moderately entertaining, I didn’t find it good enough to continue on with the rest of the series. Anyway, for the past few months I’ve been reading a lot of Australian fantasy, and, having worked … Continue reading Jennifer Fallon

Work, ASL, and Miles Vorkosigan

The network was back up today, so I spent most of today in at work, mainly dealing with annoying things that were left over from last year. One of them I really should have done at the end of last year, but in the business of end of term, it got left behind. Oh well. Perc will forgive me, I think. My good friend Jess, … Continue reading Work, ASL, and Miles Vorkosigan

Pratchett – an Embuggerance

Here’s the link to the original post: http://www.paulkidby.com/news/index.html And the text: AN EMBUGGERANCE Folks, I would have liked to keep this one quiet for a little while, but because of upcoming conventions and of course the need to keep my publishers informed, it seems to me unfair to withhold the news.  I have been diagnosed with a very rare form of earlyonset Alzheimer’s, which lay … Continue reading Pratchett – an Embuggerance

Dreadful news for Pratchett fans…

Terry has revealed he has early onset Alzheimer’s Disease. I’m trying to find his original post (the newspapers are reporting it as being on Paul Kidby’s site, but I’m having no luck in finding it… anyone?) This really has me shocked and surprised and saddened. I came to and appreciation of the Discworld late, but I’ve really enjoyed Terry’s last ten or twenty books greatly… Continue reading Dreadful news for Pratchett fans…
