Jennifer Fallon

A few years ago… must have been about 7, I guess, I picked up the first book of a new Australian fantasy writer: Jennifer Fallon. The book was Medallon, and although moderately entertaining, I didn’t find it good enough to continue on with the rest of the series. Anyway, for the past few months I’ve been reading a lot of Australian fantasy, and, having worked … Continue reading Jennifer Fallon

Work, ASL, and Miles Vorkosigan

The network was back up today, so I spent most of today in at work, mainly dealing with annoying things that were left over from last year. One of them I really should have done at the end of last year, but in the business of end of term, it got left behind. Oh well. Perc will forgive me, I think. My good friend Jess, … Continue reading Work, ASL, and Miles Vorkosigan

Pratchett – an Embuggerance

Here’s the link to the original post: http://www.paulkidby.com/news/index.html And the text: AN EMBUGGERANCE Folks, I would have liked to keep this one quiet for a little while, but because of upcoming conventions and of course the need to keep my publishers informed, it seems to me unfair to withhold the news.  I have been diagnosed with a very rare form of earlyonset Alzheimer’s, which lay … Continue reading Pratchett – an Embuggerance

This really has me shocked and surprised and saddened. I came to and appreciation of the Discworld late, but I’ve really enjoyed Terry’s last ten or twenty books greatly… Continue reading Dreadful news for Pratchett fans…

“All right, have it your way – you heard a seal bark.” My drawings have been described as pre-intentionalist, meaning they were finished before the ideas for them had occurred to me. I shall not argue the point.— James Thurber A cartoonist yelled at Ross once in the thirties: ‘Why do you reject drawings of mine and print stuff by that fifth-rate artist, Thurber?’ ‘He’s … Continue reading James Thurber

Robert Jordan – requiescat in pace

I’ve just learnt some shocking news: Robert Jordan, the author of the Wheel of Time series of fantasy novels, has passed away. (more details here) Although occasionally clumsily written, and though they’ve taken far too long to come out, they stand as one of my favourite series and an exercise in worldbuilding and storytelling that few have matched. What makes it worse is that the … Continue reading Robert Jordan – requiescat in pace

If Steven Brust can post this, so can I…

You are The Magician Skill, wisdom, adaptation. Craft, cunning, depending on dignity. Eleoquent and charismatic both verbally and in writing,  you are clever, witty, inventive and persuasive. The Magician is the male power of creation, creation by willpower and desire. In that ancient sense, it is the ability to make things so just by speaking them aloud. Reflecting this is the fact that the Magician is … Continue reading If Steven Brust can post this, so can I…
