Star Wars RPG – Defying the Empire!

Our most recent session of the Dawn of Defiance campaign, which we played last Friday, was the best so far, thanks in no small part to Martin’s running of the module. He put in a vehicle depot not mentioned in the adventure because it made sense (as there were vehicles harassing us elsewhere), which led to the wonderful experience of Nathaniel and Adam stealing a couple of light tanks and driving them around the city with stormtroopers and V-wings in hot pursuit.

Oh, and they managed to shoot down a couple of V-Wings (and a critical hit left a third V-Wing with 1 hp left… from undamaged!). Yeah, those were some cool moments.

The adventure? First To Strike by Owen C. Stephens, the fifth in the series. For the first time in quite a while, I felt we were really playing Star Wars. It helped immensely that Dark Jedi were nowhere to be seen. In fact, there isn’t a full Jedi in the party at present – Peggy’s dropped out, and Nate has ‘minor’ Jedi powers. This helps this massively.

The other part of the game that really helped cheer me up about the campaign was that the excellent source book, the Clone Wars Campaign Guide has been released. This added a bunch of options which were just perfect for my Noble/Officer character, Miles. I wasn’t using any in the session, but my fast-talking leader was having a ball of a time – I talked a group of stormtroopers into letting me and Greg’s droid into their security post, and then we took them all down whilst only taking a couple of flesh wounds. I’ll soon be retraining my character so that I can gain a follower. As I’ve noted before, the Noble has problems in that a lot of his great abilities only help other people… now, with my own bodyguard/follower, he can gain advantage of my bonuses and work as my proxy in combat. Fantastic! Without a doubt, the Clone Wars Campaign Guide is my favourite supplement of the line by a long way. Thank you, Rodney!

However, the session really was the Adam and Nate show. Whilst I co-ordinated with the rebel forces amongst the alien race we are helping, and otherwise sowed confusion amongst the Imperials, Adam and Nate showed exactly what they could do, whilst Martin kept everything going at full steam. For an encore, they captured a pirate ship, which they then rammed into a great "cannon" that was firing at the city from a mountain fortress, ejecting themselves just in time.
A great session, which really makes me look forward to the next one.
