Sword and Dragon – more Mission notes

Missions – Basic Errors or Problems
I’ll get to the problems with the optional complications somewhat later (and I’d appreciate any advice you have about them), but there are a few true oddities about the way the missions are constructed. In particular, none of the missions list in their “next missions” the Recon-in-Force mission! Yes, you can’t get to it at all!

So, here are the fixes I’m using:
* Mission: Recon-in-Force can be reached from any mission that allows Mission: Recon. (So, Recon allows you to do either a normal Recon or a Recon-in-Force).
* Mission: Beachhead has a strange list of next missions: Scout and Holding Action both are mentioned… unfortunately neither exist on the tracks. I expect that these missions actually were renamed. Scout should be Probe (Recon is already listed) and Holding Action should be Fighting Withdrawal.
* Mission: Pursuit also lists Holding Action. Change to Fighting Withdrawal.

I believe some clever people have worked out a Holding Action scenario…

Missions – The Opposition
The one adjustment that I’ve made here is that Militia forces improve from Gunnery 5 to Gunnery 4 (so Pilot 5, Gunnery 4). There’s nothing more frustrating for the opposition than to never hit; with the superior skill of the player forces, this isn’t really much of a problem. (Mercenary and House forces remain as written).

The other adjustment is to the Force selection tables. This isn’t necessary – they work well as written – but it comes out of having bought the PDF with all the 3039 Record Sheets. I have so many new ‘Mechs to play with!

Thankfully, someone got there before me. Actually, I dare say more than one, but this is the one that didn’t require me to buy War of 3039 (although I probably will get that in the near future, just because…) So,Xotl, thank you for your tables. Of course, this is 3048, not 3039, but those tables should be close enough.

The next part is to determine table modifiers based on the mission and opposing force… but that can wait for now.

Whether or not I’ll incorporate combat vehicles at some point in the future is still unclear.

Mercenary forces? I’m going to have to think about what table I use for them. Perhaps a random roll on *any* faction table, just to give a lot of variety? Smiley
