5E Adventure Review: The Haunted Watchtower

The Haunted Watchtower is an adventure for level 3 characters, in which the adventurers are asked to travel to a ruined watchtower and reclaim it from the undead that currently inhabit it.

This is a relatively straight-forward adventure, with a nice twist that recasts it from an expedition to reclaim the watchtower to instead dealing with a nearby necromancer in his lair. Poor Aramil! Once an iconic character of third edition Dungeons & Dragons, now he is the villain of this fifth edition adventure. I suspect it’s just a coincidence in names, but I find the idea amusing.

The adventure is entertaining, with evocative character interactions and several combats. On occasion, the proof-reading fails, but for the most part it’s well written. (I don’t quite understand how “Thieve’s tools” can be so consistently misspelled.)

I appreciate the layout of the necromancer’s lair, which has a few features that can change how the adventure plays and allow the players agency in their approach to the finale.

The Haunted Watchtower is a competent adventure that does some good things with its dungeon layout, and tells an effective story. Recommended.
