The City of Greyhawk campaign – all 40 sessions

I notice with some interest that we’ve reached 40 sessions in our City of Greyhawk campaign. I spent a few hours last night going through my old blog posts and the calendar, combining all the details into a long, long post that summarised what’s happened so far in the campaign. The resulting post can be found here: From the Archives, 40 Sessions of Adventure It … Continue reading The City of Greyhawk campaign – all 40 sessions

Once upon a time… News from my Greyhawk campaigns

I recently located an old page where I stored “news and rumours” inspired by my Greyhawk campaigns. The date attached to the file was December 2003, so there has been a *lot* of subsequent adventuring. Players in my games may remember some of the events; others were invented from whole cloth to flesh out the chronicle. The current date in our Greyhawk campaign is about Spring … Continue reading Once upon a time… News from my Greyhawk campaigns

Becoming the Druid of Greyhawk

Martin recently expressed an interest in his character becoming the “Druid of Greyhawk”, the term I use to describe the leader of the Druid’s Grove that services the Free City of Greyhawk and its wilderness. By the old AD&D tables, Martin’s 11th level character was one level away from gaining the “Druid” level (he was a “Initiate of the 1st Circle”). In the original AD&D, … Continue reading Becoming the Druid of Greyhawk

Happiness is… Struggle of Empires

Well, perhaps not. However, I’m pretty happy because I now have a copy of Martin Wallace’s Struggle of Empires on order. It’s likely to arrive some time next week, along with Poseidon and Merchants and Marauders. Struggle of Empires was originally published in 2004, and sits at #68 on the list of top boardgames at BoardGameGeek. That’s a relatively high rating, which undoubtedly the difficulty of acquiring the … Continue reading Happiness is… Struggle of Empires

Death’s Reach (part 1) – Portents of Dread

Death’s Reach is the first adventure of the Epic Tier produced by Wizards of the Coast; it continues some elements raised in previous adventures in the Heroic and Paragon tier adventures, especially the fight against Orcus, whose minions have been the major foes in several past adventures (in particular H1 and P2). It was now time for us to embark on our play of the … Continue reading Death’s Reach (part 1) – Portents of Dread

A few boardgames

Almost every weekend, I wander into Good Games Ballarat with a number of board games in my possession: some new, some old. Well, when I say old, I mean old from when I started collecting boardgames (quite recently), not when they were originally published. The modern rise of boardgames is indeed remarkably recent. The first major hit of the modern era was The Settlers of … Continue reading A few boardgames

My first Mirrodin draft…

Well, I’ve finally managed to play a Mirrodin draft, albeit online. (Playing RPGs every Friday evening does tend to cut out Friday Night Magic for me). The deck I drafted would probably be termed a classic infect deck, and I won almost every game with infect. 1 Plague Stinger 1 Corpse Cur 1 Blight Mamba 2 Contagious Nim 2 Ichorclaw Myr 1 Ichor Rats 3 … Continue reading My first Mirrodin draft…

Scars of Mirrodin prerelease musings

I attended our local Scars of Mirrodin prerelease yesterday – well, one or two of them. The real enthusiasts had started at midnight, but I opted to play D&D yesterday and then play a prerelease in the morning after I’d gotten some sleep. I went 3-1 in the prerelease, with a deck I’d describe as rather average. It was a White/Blue deck which had some … Continue reading Scars of Mirrodin prerelease musings

Back to the Keep on the Borderlands

The third season of D&D Encounters began today, and so a few players gathered with me, my DM, as we played the first session of the newest version of The Keep on the Borderlands. I have very fond memories of Keep. It was one of the very first adventure modules I tried to DM (badly, I might add), and I used it again as the … Continue reading Back to the Keep on the Borderlands
