One thing about Christmas and New Year’s Day being on a Friday: it wasn’t long before we started gaming in the new year (decade?) New Year’s Day’s evening saw our regular Greyhawk campaign session being played. Some of us (like me) were lacking in sleep, but there were a few things that were particularly good about the session, not least the discovery of a portal … Continue reading 2010 begins (with gaming)!
On the way home from Jeremy and Venetia’s place in Melbourne on Boxing Day after a very pleasant lunch, I stopped into Minotaur Books to use a voucher I’d been given for my birthday by Jess (thanks, Jess!) A few moments later, I had a couple of new books by one of my favourite science fiction author, Jack McDevitt – Infinity Beach and Moonfall. (Alas, … Continue reading A couple of books
What do you do on New Year’s Eve? It shouldn’t be much surprise to anyone that I spent a lot of it playing boardgames. Indeed, as the clock ticked over to 2010, Rich and I were playing a game of Agricola! So… for NYE, I got in games of… Carcassonne Ticket to Ride: 1910 Age of Empires III: the Age of Discovery Ad Astra Power … Continue reading My New Year’s Eve
I’ve just bought the new Doctor Who RPG. It’s a very nice package indeed. Player’s Guide, Gamesmaster’s Guide, two short adventures (and a lot of adventure seeds), plus other stuff. You can play as the Doctor, as the Doctor’s companions, as aliens, as another Timelord, as members of Unit or Torchwood… it’s a nice basic system which seems to handle everything very well. Action Resolution … Continue reading Doctor Who RPG
It’s almost Christmas. I’ve been spending my time playing Diablo II, Civilization IV, reading books (latest Laurell K Hamilton, Divine Misdemeanours and the latest Kylie Chan, Earth to Hell) and watching DVDs (the “new” Outer Limits, season 1; Sanctuary, season 1, and Atlantis seasons 4 & 5). Monday night, I went over to Randy’s and played Ad Astra and Agricola. Both were fun, although I mucked up … Continue reading pre-Christmas musings
I’m having a bit of trouble sleeping, so I’ve just been playing Diablo II… at long last. I tend to come to computer games a few years (decades?) after they were first released. I really am not a big computer game player. This is despite being a big gamer otherwise, and a computer programmer in real life. Well, occasional computer programmer. My work today was … Continue reading Diablo II
Tallow, by Karen Brooks, is the first of a new fantasy trilogy by an Australian author set in a fantasy version of Venice. It has a number of really good things about it: the setting is interesting, there are a number of intrigues swirling about, a fascinating magic system and, of course, a prophecy. Unfortunately, all of these good premises are let down by indifferent … Continue reading Tallow
Tired of playing the NPCs, tonight I set out in command of the Fox’s Teeth on a Recon-in-Force mission that Randy and I had decided upon a few weeks ago. As Randy was still engaged in various performances, Nash was my teammate and Derek and Sara played the opposition. The team was as follows: Fox’s Teeth: Black Knight Ian Cataphract George Enforcer Daniel Jenner vs. … Continue reading BattleTech
Oddities of oddities, we saw the 10th episode of Flashforward before you folk in the States did. And now the show is on hiatus until March… Is it dead? I hope not. The reasons for delaying it – to stop a horror run of preemptions – make sense, but the show, for all its intriguing ideas, has been rather hit and miss. In some ways, … Continue reading FlashForward
