A couple of new boardgames… Discworld, OOTS

Just a quick update. In the past few weeks, my old AD&D/Basic D&D adventure collection has been expanded significantly (with a number of orders via ebay coming in), and it’s pretty close to being “complete” – as far as 1E goes, and Basic pre-85.  However, a couple of interesting boardgames also arrived in the post today: Martin Wallace’s “Discworld: Ankh-Morpork” and Rich Burlew’s “Order of … Continue reading A couple of new boardgames… Discworld, OOTS

Magic Day and other recent gaming

I was meant to be running D&D today, but a couple of late withdrawals from the session caused it to be cancelled. (As I haven’t had much internet access over the weekend, I hope Adam and Greg got the message Josh sent them). I had thoughts of going to see Cowboys and Aliens, but as it turned out I spent the afternoon playing in the … Continue reading Magic Day and other recent gaming

Catching up on TV whilst playing wargames…

Last night, I continued to make my way through all of the Bones episodes I’ve missed this year, mainly because I was doing something else when they were showing. It hit a snag when the last five or six turned out to be repeats – in fact, the Australian showing of Bones has been paused since March, and we’ve still got about 7 or 8 … Continue reading Catching up on TV whilst playing wargames…

Getting a few old Avalon Hill games

Well, thanks to the wonder of ebay, I’ve recently picked up three old Avalon Hill games. Magic Realm I’ve already talked about a bit; it’s a fantasy adventure game which is especially deadly. Really, really deadly. Each characters has monsters they can take on with moderate safety once they know the rules – and a lot easier once they have friends with them – but then … Continue reading Getting a few old Avalon Hill games

Hooray! Merchants and Marauders on its way!

MilSims just e-mailed me to say they’ve sent my copy of Merchants & Marauders. Guess what I’ll have with me this weekend? The game is for 2-4 players (best with 4, pretty good with 3 and playable with 2) and takes (ahem) about three hours. But it also has really pretty components and interesting game play. And who doesn’t like being a pirate? Well, if … Continue reading Hooray! Merchants and Marauders on its way!

A lot of gaming over the past 10 years…

I’ve just been updating one of my documents which details (in summary) the Greyhawk campaigns I’ve played in/run. What astonished me is how long ago some of those games are getting! One of my favourite campaigns – the Great Kingdom campaign which had Gofa’s Lawful Evil enchanter, Cassie, and which ended with us going into Gary Gygax’s Necropolis – all hail the Set Rahotep! – … Continue reading A lot of gaming over the past 10 years…

Happiness is… Struggle of Empires

Well, perhaps not. However, I’m pretty happy because I now have a copy of Martin Wallace’s Struggle of Empires on order. It’s likely to arrive some time next week, along with Poseidon and Merchants and Marauders. Struggle of Empires was originally published in 2004, and sits at #68 on the list of top boardgames at BoardGameGeek. That’s a relatively high rating, which undoubtedly the difficulty of acquiring the … Continue reading Happiness is… Struggle of Empires
