People run many types of role-playing game and styles of gaming have changed over the years, but in general your average D&D game is made of two components: role-playing and gaming. Sounds stupid? Well, in a way, it is. However, it’s an important insight. When you come down to it, combat is a huge part of a D&D game. That combat provides the “game” aspect … Continue reading How to be a Killer DM
I’ve ordered the Upper Works of CZ from the Troll Lords, so, with any luck, that will soon be winging its way to me from the states. This will give me quite a bit of detail on the upper section of the castle, which I’ve never ever done any development work on. (It’s always been ruined so my players have just gone straight to the dungeons). … Continue reading Castle Zagyg
Well, both the 4e DM Screen and the 13th issue of Pathfinder were waiting for me in my mailbox today. There’s a bunch of other stuff that’s on its way, but those are the products that actually found me. The DM Screen is cool; really, really thick cardstock, and a bunch of useful tables. Well, that’s my initial impression; we’ll see how it stacks up … Continue reading 4e Screen & Pathfinder
Ok, we really didn’t see this one coming… Fantasy Flight Games (the game publisher that prints a bunch of great boardgames, like Arkham Horror, Descent and Starcraft) has just gained the rights to BattleLore from Days of Wonder. Wow! You can read more here. BoardGameGeek discusion here. FFG is already publishing a swag of interesting games (I can’t wait for the Battlestar Galacticagame), and they’ve … Continue reading Fantasy Flight Games gets another license
…I’m “playing” D&D TinyAdventures on Facebook. They’re a little like Progress Quest, although more interactive. Slightly. You create a character, choose an adventure to go on, see what happens and then go on another one an hour or so later. It’s very silly. You don’t do much, but I can see them becoming very, very addictive… Continue reading This is silly…
Friday’s session (Castle Zagyg) saw our group without the cleric. It also saw an eighteen round combat against a group of hobgoblins. To be fair, it was the entire lair of about 15-20 of them, all coming out to fight the foolish humans who in their initial parley told the hobgoblins that they were there for the treasure. Yes, I hoped the party would run… … Continue reading Latest 4e sessions
One of the Castles & Crusades products I was waiting for came yesterday: Engineering Dungeons. It’s a guide to building dungeons for C&C, primarily by random generation. I find it fairly disappointing; it fails to add much to the established material on dungeon-building (as found primarily in the 1e DMG and the 3e DMG), and indeed lacks certain areas that I would have found essential for … Continue reading Too many commas!
I’m currently in that awful state of having ordered a bunch of things, but now having to wait for them to actually arrive. There are the two books from Amazon that have been sent. There are the two ASL products from MMP that have been sent. There are the three wargames from Warchest that have been ordered. There are the wargame and M44 expansions from … Continue reading Waiting, waiting…
Well, I saw The Doctor’s Daughter for the first time last Sunday, and it was great. Really, really good. Astonishingly, it wasn’t written by Steven Moffat. I would dearly love to see Jenny again, and – with any luck – we will. Meanwhile, Steven Moffat has won the Hugo Award for the third time running, this time for Blink. I have no doubt he deserved … Continue reading Doctor Who and Hugo
