Scripted “In Medias Res” – More thoughts on the beginning of adventures

I wrote an article a last month on techniques used to begin an adventure. I’ve just been reading an Organised Play adventure that commits one of the cardinal sins of such adventures: It allows the players to say “No, we don’t want to play this adventure.” Huh? Why the hell is it giving them the option? I hate weak beginnings like that to an adventure. … Continue reading Scripted “In Medias Res” – More thoughts on the beginning of adventures

X-Wing: Why are there Asteroids above a Space Station?

The monthly X-Wing tournament at Goodgames Ballarat was rather short of players this month: only three of us. I ended up playing two games against Robbo and one against Josh. The game against Josh was played on his new space station battlemat. It looks really good… up until you put the ships on it, at which case the two Rebel squadrons we were fighting with … Continue reading X-Wing: Why are there Asteroids above a Space Station?

An X-Wing Tournament

I played in this tournament about 2 weeks ago. Five players turned up to Good Games Ballarat to play in the game, with Garth, new to the game, providing a sixth player who played whoever had the bye. We had three rounds, all lasting about an hour, which gave us plenty of time to find new ways to choose the wrong manoeuvres! X-Wing is a … Continue reading An X-Wing Tournament

X-Wing play report

My FLGS (Good Games Ballarat) will soon be hosting monthly X-Wing tournaments, as well as a Store Championship, so Sarah decided she wanted a bit of practice with the game. She had a couple of week’s leave, so we were able to get our times to sync up and have a couple of games before the first of the tournaments. Sarah definitely prefers playing the … Continue reading X-Wing play report

Dawn of Defiance update

Last Friday, we finished part 6 of the Dawn of Defiance campaign, The Core of Corruption. This installment gave us quite a number of troubles, mainly relating to its structure which assumed that we’d be more active in our investigation than we were happy in being. Honestly, most of us would be happy to have a big sign saying "Go This Way" at the beginning of the adventure, … Continue reading Dawn of Defiance update

BattleTech, Star Wars and Starcraft… a normal weekend

Well, Thursday evening through Saturday went like this: Thursday evening: BattleTech Friday lunch: played Cosmic Encounter with my students. (Go Virus!) Friday afternoon: went to see Milk Friday evening: played Star Wars RPG: Dawn of Defiance  Saturday afternoon: played BattleTech  Saturday evening: played Starcraft: the Board Game. Yeah, something of a good weekend. BattleTech was something of a disaster for Rich & Josh’s team, which … Continue reading BattleTech, Star Wars and Starcraft… a normal weekend

Star Wars RPG – Defying the Empire!

Our most recent session of the Dawn of Defiance campaign, which we played last Friday, was the best so far, thanks in no small part to Martin’s running of the module. He put in a vehicle depot not mentioned in the adventure because it made sense (as there were vehicles harassing us elsewhere), which led to the wonderful experience of Nathaniel and Adam stealing a couple … Continue reading Star Wars RPG – Defying the Empire!

More Star Wars errata

Yay! The latest errata has been posted for Star Wars Saga Edition! My character, Miles “Starkiller” Tradora, who is currently a Human Noble 7/Officer 1, has gained 5000 cr out of the errata, but it doesn’t seem much else has changed for him. Bunch of Force power errata, though I don’t know how much is new and how much is significant. Continue reading More Star Wars errata

Echoes of the Jedi

Star Wars this week saw us almost complete Echoes of the Jedi. It also saw us missing our techie (Nathaniel) and our medical robot (Greg), which was incredibly not good. However, some of the opponents we were facing made me wonder what the heck is going on in development for the DoD campaign. One opponent we faced had us start down the condition track and … Continue reading Echoes of the Jedi

Dark Side Points and Force Powers

Someone on EN World asked about a rather strict Star Wars GM who gave out Dark Side Points for any use of Force Grip. I had a think about the situation and gave my reply; I repeat the reply here. I think it provides a useful solution to the Move Object debacle we’ve had in our games, although Martin will need to make the final … Continue reading Dark Side Points and Force Powers
