Star Wars RPG – Defying the Empire!

Our most recent session of the Dawn of Defiance campaign, which we played last Friday, was the best so far, thanks in no small part to Martin’s running of the module. He put in a vehicle depot not mentioned in the adventure because it made sense (as there were vehicles harassing us elsewhere), which led to the wonderful experience of Nathaniel and Adam stealing a couple … Continue reading Star Wars RPG – Defying the Empire!

Sword and Dragon – more Mission notes

Missions – Basic Errors or ProblemsI’ll get to the problems with the optional complications somewhat later (and I’d appreciate any advice you have about them), but there are a few true oddities about the way the missions are constructed. In particular, none of the missions list in their “next missions” the Recon-in-Force mission! Yes, you can’t get to it at all! So, here are the … Continue reading Sword and Dragon – more Mission notes

Sword and Dragon – Basic Mission Analysis

Basic Mission Analysis:The various mission tracks show signs of good ideas not properly thought through. Why do you gain bonus points if its raining (making it harder to hit) in a Recon track where there is no Salvage option… so only helping the player?  I’ve just done some analysis of the potential WP rewards from each track. This assumes you manage to salvage an average … Continue reading Sword and Dragon – Basic Mission Analysis

Sword and Dragon – Maintenance and Updates

For those uninterested in my BattleTech posts, I’d advise looking elsewhere. This is going to be one of a series of posts looking at the Starterbook: Sword & Dragon campaign from the perspective of someone who is currently playing it, and finding one or two relatively minor problems that need fixing… or just wants to tinker with it a bit. So, here’s the first bit to … Continue reading Sword and Dragon – Maintenance and Updates

BattleTech: Sword & Dragon notes

I was just reading some excellent blog entries over on the Scrapyard Armory page, and I noticed some discussion of damage to Mech Warriors in the Chaos Campaign (an extension of the Warchest campaign that we use our BattleTech Sword & Dragon campaign). Let’s face it: there aren’t any rules in S&D about damaged warriors. Do they heal? How quickly? My thought is that in future … Continue reading BattleTech: Sword & Dragon notes

D&D character backgrounds

My attention has just been drawn to the “Scales of War” backgrounds in Dragon #366, and I think they’re pretty neat and they would work for our campaign – they’re quite generic. So, every PC in the Friday campaign can choose one background. This is one of the free issues of Dragon, so you can download the file from here: http://www.wizards.com/files/366_Characters_of_War.pdf My suggestions for the … Continue reading D&D character backgrounds

D&D and non-combat stuff

Rodney Thompson wrote a really good post on non-combat challenges in 4e on EN World today which has mostly been ignored by everyone else, so I wanted to point it to anyone who reads my blog. I know you’re out there, I can hear you breathing! 🙂 Skill challenges are the big innovation of 4e, and I don’t think they work yet. Yeah, the idea is … Continue reading D&D and non-combat stuff
